Meet Holly Walker of Septic Preservation Services

Septic Preservation Services

Holly has been a member of the Septic Preservation Team for almost 18 months.  She was brought on initially to help with product descriptions with the online store but is now involved with packaging, pricing and postage, as well as increasing their presence online.

Holly also has taken over  writing the daily blogs  and updating the online calendars to free up time for Bob Silva, head of SPS, and allow him more time for his daily administrative duties.

She has a degree in Medieval History and has worked for 8 years in  Human Resource and recruitment for engineering companies, involving Automotive, Aerospace and Oil and Gas.  While Holly does not possess an engineering degree, she feels her past experiences help her in writing the blogs and she feels she can present the technical matters in  a way that everyone can understand.  She is able to take a colleague’s repair story and research about the fix and the reason for i,t and present it in her daily blogs.

Holly is British and moved to the United States in 2009.  She initially lived in Missouri, Colorado, and then Massachusetts.   She is now living in California, slightly north of San Diego, with her two elementary aged children. She is able to work remotely and stay involved in SPS.   She has enjoyed spending time exploring her new town and state and discovering the best beaches with her children.

Being British sometimes creates problems with the “language barrier”.   According to Holly, ” Although we all speak English, I still find I’m sometimes speaking a foreign language.  For example, I was corresponding with a supplier of ours about their pumps and also the spares kits that they provide to carryout maintenance and repairs on their pumps.  After placing the spares kit onto the website, Bob pointed out to me that in the USA a “spares kit” is not something that would ever be referred to and a “rebuild kit” is the correct term.  It turned out that my contact with our supplier was also British, which I hadn’t realized, and we were both using the wrong term and confusing everyone else!

Holly enjoys being a valued member of the SPS team and helping to spread the word on their great reputation.

Visit and read Holly’s daily blogs and find out how Septic Preservation Services can help you with all your septic system maintenance, repair, design and installation.

Water Usage Habits Important for Septic System

laundry All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services has septic repairs scheduled today for customers in Canton, Stoughton, Bridgewater, Sharon, Norton, and Mansfield, MA.   In addition to the repair itself, we will provide advice and education, if necessary, to the property owner that may help prevent another repair being necessary in the future.

We have found that many people with septic systems are unaware that you may need to change your water usage habits to keep  your system operating correctly.  A common mistake that many septic system owners make is to put too much water into the system.  The decomposition process can become strained if there is too much excess water in the system, resulting in a variety of problems.  Ideally, septic owners should only be using a maximum of 50 gallons of water per day, per person. The following averages for common household activities can help you keep track:

  • Dishwasher Cycle – 7 gallons
  • Washing Machine – 40 gallons per load (less with front-loader machines)
  • Toilet – 2 gallons per flush, 1.6 gallons for newer standard toilets
  • Shower – 2.5 gallons per minute (a 10 minute shower = 25 gallons)

It can be difficult to stay on top of usage, particularly for large families, but laying down some basic guidelines can help everyone to work together . New environmentally-friendly appliances, toilets and shower heads can help reduce usage without a lot of extra effort, and cost.  A water meter can be helpful for households that feed off of a well.  The government website also has a lot of helpful ideas and tips for reducing water usage. Remember, a septic system is installed based upon the number of people that are anticipated to be using it.  If your base number increases, you might need to upgrade to a larger system.

septic design and installation

New Septic Design by All Clear Septic

septic design and installation All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services is designing a septic system for a customer in Sturbridge, MA who is putting an addition onto their home which includes two bedrooms.  Their septic system needs to be able to accommodate the extra usage which comes from additional people in the home.  Even if the owners were not planning to use these rooms as ‘bedrooms’, to be able to describe those rooms as bedrooms in the future, they must have a septic system that is designed accordingly.

We have experience designing septic systems, and know the rules and regulations for septic system design that must be followed to stay compliant with the town Board of Health and state regulations.  If you need a septic system design or if you have any questions about septic systems, please do contact our office at 508-763-4431 or visit

septic system alarms

Septic System Alarms

septic system alarms All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services is installing a septic system alarm for a customer today in Stow, MA.  Septic tanks can be fitted with an alert system that will notify homeowners when the tank needs pumping.  Some are fitted with alarms that will make a high-pitched noise, or sometimes they use a light on the side of the house as an indicator.

A septic alarm can also indicate a malfunction (such as a broken pump, a power failure, a leak inside or outside the tank, clogged drain pipes, or freezing within the pipes) within your septic system.  Our customer wants to have this reassurance that if they do have a septic problem it will be found quickly, and can, therefore, be fixed without it developing into a large costly septic repair or in extreme cases, septic failure.

We have recently installed and repaired septic alarms for customers in Ware, Dudley, Millbury, Reading, and Lynnfield, MA.  If you would be interested in a septic alarm, or have questions about septic system alarms, please do contact our Norton MA office at 508-763-4431 or visit

Septic System Upgrades

risers All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services provides septic system upgrades to customers who wish to improve the effectiveness of their septic systems and save thousands $ over the lifetime of their septic system.  We can install septic system risers and covers so your septic system is more accessible and it is also much more safe and attractive. These goals can be achieved through the use of strong, durable risers and system covers.  Once installed, homeowners can provide easy access to their septic system for future repairs, upgrades or cleaning services, eliminating the need to dig and excavate the system each time it needs to be pumped.

We also provide effluent filter installation and maintenance.  People in the septic industry, including engineers, scientists, and educators, suggest that property owners install an effluent filter in the outlet tee of their septic tank to extend the life of their system.  Coupled with a regular maintenance program, such as All Clear Septic and Wastewater’s Preventative Maintenance Program, and professional pumping, your septic system could actually last indefinitely.  Due to the high cost associated with replacing a septic system, this seemingly small upgrade to your system will pay off in a big way.

Today, we are installing a septic system effluent filter for a customer in Attleboro, MA.  We are also installing a riser on the inlet and outlet of tank and dbox for a customer in Acushnet as required by the town Board of Health agent. We have extensive experience in the region with with local town BOH agents and homeowners to ensure that their properties are compliant and safe, in addition to providing financially, and efficiency beneficial upgrades.  If you would be interested in septic system upgrades or if you have any questions please do contact our Norton, MA office at 508-763-4431 or visit

Do's and Don'ts

Septic System Do’s and Don’ts

Do's and Don'ts All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services have many years experience working with customers to locate and fix their septic problems, whether they are large or small.  Our customers will often come to us with a symptom of a septic problem, such as sewage smells in the home, or septic backups in the toilet, but not know what has caused this problem and how to fix it.  We will, of course, locate and fix the problem, but we will also endeavor to find the source of the septic problem to ensure that it will not happen again.

This will often come in the form of education for a home owner.  If you move from a home which is connected to town sewer to a home with its own septic system, we have found that many property owners do not realize they need to modify their behaviour accordingly.  Here are some septic systems ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’

  • DO call All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services for a Voluntary Assessment of your septic system.
  • DO conserve water whenever possible as a means of reducing the volume of wastewater that will need to be treated and disposed.
  • DO make repairs to any faucets or toilets that are leaking.
  • DO make sure that you are only discharging biodegradable wastes into your system.
  • DO restrict or avoid use of your garbage disposal.
  • DO take the time to ensure that any down spouts or other surface water is diverted away from your drainfield.
  • DO keep the cover to your septic tank accessible by installing covers and risers for easier inspections and pumping.
  • DO get your septic tank pumped regularly and have it checked for any cracks or leaks.
  • DO have an effluent filter installed to prevent debris from entering your drainfield.
  • DO add a laundry filter to your washing machine.
  • DO put kitchen trash into a compost or throw it into the garbage – not down your drains.
  • DON’T flush products such as tampons, sanitary napkins, condoms, disposable diapers, or wipes into your system.
  • DON’T empty oils or other types of kitchen grease down your drain.
  • DON’T dump any items that can disrupt the treatment process or contaminate groundwater, such as: paints, oils, thinners, pesticides, poisons or disinfectants.
  • DON”T do all your laundry on one day.  Spread your laundry loads throughout the week
  • DON’T build anything over your drainfield or dig in it for any reason.
  • DON’T plant any landscaping over your drainfield – except grass.
  • DON’T drive a vehicle over your drainfield or compact the soil in ANY way.
  • DON’T run purification back flush into the septic tank.

Today we have septic repairs at customers’ properties in North Attleboro, Foxboro, Franklin, Sharon, Bellingham, and Blackstone, MA.  Some of these repairs could have been avoided if they had followed the above guidelines.

If you have a septic problem and need to make an appointment, or have any questions, it is inadvisable to wait. Please do contact our Norton MA office at 508-763-4431 or visit

Septic Pumping

Importance of Septic System Pumping

Septic Pumping  All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services knows that the most important part of septic system maintenance is regular septic system pumping.  Septic pump outs ensure that your system will continue to operate correctly for many years to come. The frequency of the septic pump outs depend on a variety of factors including the size of your septic tank, the number of people in the property and your water usage, but it is generally recommended that a system should be pumped every 3-5 years. You really want to ensure that you pump your septic tank before you see any problems such as:

  • Backup in the house
  • Backup in the cleanout
  • Water surfacing over the tank
  • Water surfacing over the drainfield

The purpose of the septic tank is to separate the wastewater from the solid waste and allow only the wastewater to enter the drainfield. Heavier solids settle to the bottom of the tank and become sludge, while the lighter waste settles to the top and becomes scum. The wastewater is drawn out of the tank from the middle of the two layers. Over time these two layers thicken to the point where they come together in the middle of the tank. Once this occurs, sludge and scum leave the septic tank and enter the drainfield, which causes the soil and drainfield to clog. This is usually a slow process, and you won’t know it’s happening until your septic tank drainfield clogs to the point of failure and begins to back up.  Once the solids accumulate to the point that they begin entering the drainfield, pumping out the septic tank will not reverse the process. A septic pumping should be done before solids enter the drainfield.

Some septic tanks are fitted with an alert system that will notify homeowners when the tank needs pumping. Some are fitted with alarms that will make a high-pitched noise, or sometimes they use a light on the side of the house as an indicator.  If your current septic tank doesn’t have an alarm or alert system, it isn’t too difficult or expensive to have one installed and this will take away the guess work.

Today we have septic pumping scheduled for customers in Rehoboth, Swansea, Attleboro, Seekonk, Norton, and Taunton, MA.

If you need to have your septic tank pumped or if you are unsure whether your system needs septic pumping please do contact our Norton, MA office at 508-763-4431 or visit

septic system maintenance

Preventative Maintenance Program by All Clear Septic

septic system maintenance All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services knows that proper preventative maintenance can extend the life of your septic system. Septic systems that are not regularly maintained will average less than 20 years, however studies conducted by field professors, scientists, and engineer,s reveal that proper maintenance can help a septic system to last indefinitely. This can save the homeowner thousands of dollars over a lifetime.

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services offers an affordable Preventative Maintenance Program designed to give our residential and commercial clients peace of mind in knowing that their septic system is being properly maintained, checked, and monitored.  We are so confident in our ability to effectively maintain your septic system, that we offer a “Pass or It’s FREE Guarantee” on Title 5 Inspections to all of our Preventative Maintenance Program customers that are in the program and have followed our recommendations.  We also give our up-to-date Preventative Maintenance Program customers a 50% discount off of all Title 5 Inspections.

We have experience servicing various types of septic system including Singulair Service, FAST Service, Jet System Service, and Fuji Clean Service.  Today, we have a Singulair Service for a customer in Freetown, MA, where we will be doing a full service and aerator.  We also have septic service and preventative maintenance appointments in Berkley, Fall River, Westport, New Bedford, and Fairhaven, MA.

The regularity of serving depends on the septic system and the use it gets.  For example, a small summer cottage on the cape that is only used seasonally will not need as many services as a large 5 bedroom family home or a restaurant.  If you would be interested in septic system services or have any questions please do contact our Norton MA office at 508-763-4431 or visit
