Cesspools Need Regular Maintenance

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services work with many customers that don’t have a conventional septic system on their property but instead have a cesspool. As stated on the Mass Gov website:

“A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.”

Although cesspools are now out of date and there are more efficient and environmentally conscious alternatives Massachusetts does not require them to be replaced. They state that:

“Only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).”

We provide cesspool services to customers so that they can ensure that their system continues to operate correctly. Today we have cesspool services scheduled in Rehoboth, Rochester, Lakeville, Freetown, Dighton and Norton MA. We do also provide cesspool replacements and have recently done so in Oxford, Southborough and Wrentham MA. It Might Be Time For Septic Pumping If Your System Has Not Had A Pump Out In The Last Three Years

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services understand that many people had friends and family visit for the holidays and other people had large parties at their homes. The holidays are a wonderful time of year to catch up with people and eat good food but once everyone has returned home it is time for cleaning up and getting back to normal routines. What many people will not consider is that over the holidays if you have lots of guests staying in your home for an extend period of time or a large party your septic system will have been working harder than usual and if you have a small system or you have not had septing pumping recently it may be time for a septic pump out. Regular pumping helps prevent solids from escaping into the drainfield and clogging soil pores. While pumping frequency depends on the various factors including the size of your tank and the use it gets it is recommended that systems be pumped at least once every three years for homes not having a garbage disposal. If the home’s system has a garbage disposal, it should be pumped annually. Today we have septic pumping scheduled in Uxbridge, Bellingham, Blackstone, Franklin and Upton MA. If you are unsure if you need septic pumping or if you have questions about your septic system or want to schedule a pump out please do contact our Norton Office on 508-763-4431 or visit http://www.allclearseptic.com

A Septic Distribution Box Or D-Box Receives Effluent From A Septic Tank And Re-distributes It To The Drainfield

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services is replacing a D-Box for a customer today in Bridgewater, MA. A septic distribution box  (D-Box) is a container used to receive septic system effluent from a septic tank and to re-distribute the effluent into a network of attached drainfield or soakaway bed absorption trenches and pipes. The D-box works by gravity, flowing effluent into the drainfield (or leach field) piping network. It must be installed correctly to ensure that it  distributes evenly. You must also maintain your septic system and the best way to do this is to have your system regularly pumped and to use your septic system correctly. The following are some steps that you can take to ensure that your system can work correctly:

  • Minimize the use of the garbage disposal
  • Do not put grease down your drains
  • Spread loads of laundry out over time rather than doing multiple loads in a short period of time, and use liquid detergents rather than powdered detergents
  • Avoid excessively long showers
  • Avoid leaving tap water running when shaving, brushing teeth or doing other personal or household tasks
  • Do not flush medications, harmful chemicals, excessive amounts of bleach, harsh drain cleaners or degreasers
  • Have the septic tank pumped at least every three years
  • Do not add any septic systems cleaners, enzymes or additives
  • Remove water conditioning backwash discharges from the septic system
  • Do not plant trees and shrubs over leach fields
  • Do not flush personal products, paper towels, wipes or diapers
  • Do not clean or rinse paint brushes in the sinks
  • Equip all hot tubs, spas, whirlpool baths, etcetera with drain limiting valves that will only allow five gallons per minute to drain from fixture
  • Do not drive vehicles over leach fields

We also have septic repairs for customers today in Hanson, Hanover, Middleboro, Stoughton and Taunton MA. Many of these repairs could have been avoided if the property owners had followed some of the above advice. Septic Pumping Is Essential Every 3 – 5 Years To Ensure That Your Tank Does Not Overflow

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services can help you ensure that your septic system continues to operate correctly by pumping your septic tank. Septic pumping is essential every 3 – 5 years to ensure that your tank does not overflow. As you can imagine it is not advisable to leave pumping too late late because the results can be unpleasant and expensive to fix. The regularity that your tank needs to be pumped will vary from various factors including water usage and the size of your tank. For example a family with 5 members including teenagers will typically use more water and therefore need more their tank pumped sooner than a home of a retired couple. However this too can very dramatically if that couple have extended family visiting for a prolonged period. Essentially if you are unsure please do call our office where we will be happy to answer any questions. Today we are pumping septic systems for customers in Holliston, Millis, Bellingham, Franklin, Wrentham and Foxboro MA. If you need to schedule a septic pump out appointment or if you have any questions please do contact our Norton, MA office on 508-763-4431 or visit www.allclearseptic.com

Septic System Advise To Keep Your Septic System Working Correctly

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services are always happy to answer questions or give septic system advise to customers about their septic systems. We know that many people who have a property with a septic system remain unaware that there are some simple suggestions to follow that will make your septic system continue to operate correctly and prevent the need for septic repairs. Conventional septic systems can function very well with minimal care. In fact, most septic tanks will only require an inspection and pumping out every three to five years if they are used properly. However to ensure that this is the case a few good things to remember are:

  • Have your septic system inspected and pumped every 3 to 5 years. If the tank fills up with an excess of solids, the wastewater will not have enough time to settle in the tank. These excess solids will then pass on to the leach field, where they will clog the drain lines and soil.
  • Know the location of your septic system and drain field/ leach field, and keep a record of all inspections, pumpings, repairs, contract or engineering work for future references. Keep a sketch of it handy for service visits.
  • Take leftover hazardous chemicals to your approved hazardous waste collection center for disposal. Use bleach, disinfectants, and drain and toilet bowl cleaners sparingly and in accordance with product labels.
  • Your toilet or sink is not a trash can so don’t dump non-biodegradables (cigarette butts, diapers, feminine products, etc.) or grease down your sink or toilet. Non-biodegradables can clog the pipes, while grease can thicken and clog the pipes. Store cooking oils, fats, and grease in a can for disposal in the garbage.
  • Do not put paint thinner, polyurethane, anti-freeze, pesticides, some dyes, disinfectants, water softeners, and other strong chemicals into the system. These can cause major upsets in the septic tank by killing the biological part of your septic system and polluting the groundwater. Small amounts of standard household cleaners, drain cleansers, detergents, etc. will be diluted in the tank and should cause no damage to the system.
  • Excessive laundry loads with your washing machine does not allow your septic tank time to adequately treat wastes and overwhelms the entire system with excess wastewater.
  • Do not use chemical solvents to clean the plumbing or septic system. “Miracle” chemicals will kill microorganisms that consume harmful wastes. These products can also cause groundwater contamination

If you do think that your septic system needs a repair or maintenance please do contact us where we will be happy to answer any questions you have and make an appointment if necessary. Today we have septic repair appointments including a d-box repair and septic pump repair in Chelmsford, Carlisle, Maynard, Boxborough, Acton and Stow MA. Small Changes and Actions Can Help Prevent Septic Problems Like Installing A Lint Filter On Your Washer

All Clear Septic and Wastewater Services have extensive knowledge of septic systems having worked within the septic industry for over 15 years in this region. We are always willing to share our knowledge to help our customers better use and maintain their septic systems. We have found that many people who have perhaps not lived in a home with a septic system, instead of town sewage, are unaware of some easy changes that they can make to ensure that their septic system continues to work correctly and to avoid costly repairs. We would suggest:

Septic System Do’s and Don’ts

Things you should do
DO call All-Clear for a Voluntary Assessment of your septic system.
DO conserve water whenever possible as a means of reducing the volume of wastewater that will need to be treated and disposed.
DO make repairs to any faucets or toilets that are leaking.
DO make sure that you are only discharging biodegradable wastes into your system.
DO restrict or avoid use of your garbage disposal.
DO take the time to ensure that any down spouts or other surface water is diverted away from your drainfield.
DO keep the cover to your septic tank accessible by installing covers and risers for easier inspections and pumping.
DO get your septic tank pumped regularly and have it checked for any cracks or leaks.
DO have an effluent filter installed to prevent debris from entering your drainfield.
DO add a laundry filter to your washing machine.
DO put kitchen trash into a compost or throw it into the garbage – not down your drains.

Things you should NOT do
DON’T flush products such as tampons, sanitary napkins, condoms, disposable diapers or wipes into your system.
DON’T empty oils or other types of kitchen grease down your drain.
DON’T dump any items that can disrupt the treatment process or contaminate groundwater, such as: paints, oils, thinners, pesticides, poisons or disinfectants.
DON’T build anything over your drainfield or dig in it for any reason.
DON’T plant any landscaping over your drainfield – except grass.
DON’T drive a vehicle over your drainfield or compact the soil in ANY way.
DON’T run purification back flush into the septic tank.

Unfortunately not following these suggestions can result in septic problems. We were contacted by a customer who needed a septic repair and we found that discharge from a laundry machine, as pictured, was causing the problem.

Laundry machine discharge

This is why, as recommended above, it is important to install a lint filter on your washer to keep this from clogging your septic system. We have other septic repairs today in Swansea, Rehoboth, New Bedford, Westport and Mattapoisett MA today.
